The new SharePoint site theming features use a JSON schema to store color settings and other information about each theme. Theme settings are stored in a JSON object that contains the following keys:

Themes This bold, classic design template includes coordinating fonts, colors, and graphic effects so that the content you add coordinates automatically. The widescreen (16:9) format is suitable for any situation: business, school, or home use. Simple is not just its name. The Simple theme is one of the most SEO optimized themes on the list due to its very minimalistic design. And best of all, it’s absolutely free. The simple theme boasts mobile-friendly and versatile layouts making content consumption a breeze on any device that you can think of.

  • name: The name of the theme, which appears in the theme picker UI and is also used by administrators and developers to refer to the theme in PowerShell cmdlets or calls to the SharePoint REST API.
  • isInverted: This value should be false for light themes and true for dark themes; it controls whether SharePoint uses dark or light theme colors to render text on colored backgrounds.
  • backgroundImageUri: The URI of an optional background image for the theme (value can be blank if no background image).
  • palette: The RGB color settings for the theme, stored as a nested JSON object with the following keys:

Content Seoheadlines, Body And Themes

The following is an example of a JSON object that defines a theme.

The SharePoint Framework includes eight built-in themes: six on light backgrounds, and two on dark backgrounds. You might find it useful to create a custom theme by starting from one of the built-in themes and adjusting it to suit your needs.

Another option is to use the Theme Generator tool to build a custom theme. It provides an interactive UI for selecting theme colors, and automatically generates the JSON, SASS, and PowerShell definitions for your custom theme.

Note

The theme generator definitions do not currently include the 'error' or 'accent' color slots. These can be manually added to your generated definition before uploading to the tenant.

The following is a summary of the built-in themes, including JSON definitions for the theme colors that you can use as a starting point for customization.

Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideasexplored in a literary work.

Language: Speech and Silence

Their Eyes Were Watching God is mostoften celebrated for Hurston’s unique use of language, particularlyher mastery of rural Southern black dialect. Throughout the novel, she utilizes an interesting narrative structure, splitting the presentationof the story between high literary narration and idiomatic discourse. The long passages of discourse celebrate the culturally rich voicesof Janie’s world; these characters speak as do few others in Americanliterature, and their distinctive grammar, vocabulary, and tonemark their individuality.

Themes

Hurston’s use of language parallels Janie’s quest to findher voice. As Henry Louis Gates Jr. writes in the afterword to mostmodern editions of the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God isprimarily concerned “with the project of finding a voice, with languageas an instrument of injury and salvation, of selfhood and empowerment.” Jodystifles Janie’s speech, as when he prevents her from talking after heis named mayor; her hatred of him stems from this suppression of herindividuality. Tea Cake, on the other hand, engages her speech, conversingwith her and putting himself on equal terms with her; her love forhim stems from his respect for her individuality.

After Janie discovers her ability to define herself byher speech interactions with others, she learns that silence toocan be a source of empowerment; having found her voice, she learnsto control it. Similarly, the narrator is silent in conspicuousplaces, neither revealing why Janie isn’t upset with Tea Cake’sbeating nor disclosing her words at the trial. In terms of boththe form of the novel and its thematic content, Hurston places greatemphasis on the control of language as the source of identity andempowerment.

Power and Conquest as Means to Fulfillment

Whereas Janie struggles to assert a place for herselfby undertaking a spiritual journey toward love and self-awareness,Jody attempts to achieve fulfillment through the exertion of power. He tries to purchase and control everyone and everything aroundhim; he exercises his authority hoping to subordinate his environmentto his will. He labors under the illusion that he can control theworld around him and that, by doing so, he will achieve some senseof profound fulfillment. Others exhibit a similar attitude towardpower and control; even Tea Cake, for example, is filled with hubrisas the hurricane whips up, certain that he can survive the stormthrough his mastery of the muck. For both Jody and Tea Cake, thenatural world reveals the limits of human power. In Jody’s case,as disease sets in, he begins to lose the illusion that he can controlhis world; the loss of authority over Janie as she talks back tohim furthers this disillusionment. In Tea Cake’s case, he is forcedto flee the hurricane and struggles to survive the ensuing floods. This limit to the scope of one’s power proves the central problemwith Jody’s power-oriented approach toward achieving fulfillment:ultimately, Jody can neither stop his deterioration nor silenceJanie’s strong will.

Love and Relationships versus Independence

Their Eyes Were Watching God is the storyof how Janie achieves a strong sense of self and comes to appreciateher independence. But her journey toward enlightenment is not undertakenalone. The gender differences that Hurston espouses require thatmen and women provide each other things that they need but do notpossess. Janie views fulfilling relationships as reciprocal andbased on mutual respect, as demonstrated in her relationship withTea Cake, which elevates Janie into an equality noticeably absentfrom her marriages to Logan and Jody.

Although relationships are implied to be necessary toa fulfilling life, Janie’s quest for spiritual fulfillment is fundamentallya self-centered one. She is alone at the end yet seems content. She liberates herself from her unpleasant and unfulfilling relationshipswith Logan and Jody, who hinder her personal journey. Through her relationshipwith Tea Cake, Janie experiences true fulfillment and enlightenmentand becomes secure in her independence. She feels a deep connectionto the world around her and even feels that the spirit of Tea Cakeis with her. Thus, even though she is alone, she doesn’t feel alone.
