Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks held their first scrimmage of the year over the weekend, giving the players a chance to shake off some dust in the confines of CenturyLink Field. And even though the day was cut short after Branden Jackson went down on the field, a lot was accomplished in just one half of the football game.

Starter Russell Wilson finished the day but it was backup Geno Smith who really got a chance to shine on Saturday afternoon.

“Geno did a nice job,” Coach Pete Carroll said after the mock game wrapped up. “That was a really nice series going down the field the first series, he hit everything and looked great. He was real comfortable, felt really confident in the communications and handling the situations going against the first defense, so he did a nice job. It’s great to see.”

  1. Geno Smith is sticking around in the Pacific Northwest. The quarterback is signing with the Seattle Seahawks, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.
  2. Smith was a 2013 second-round pick who started 29 games in his first two seasons with the Jets. He had his jaw broken when then-teammate IK Enemkpali punched him in the locker room and Ryan Fitzpatrick took over as the team’s starter in 2015. Smith last played in a regular season game with the Chargers in 2018.
  3. Geno Smith may still be playing at MetLife Stadium, but the change of scenery and new team he plays for has caused him to take on a new look. And new workout and nutrition regimens, as well.

Smith finished his outing completing eight of eight passes attempted and logging two drives, both culminating in scores.

“He’s such a talented player, and he understands our stuff, and he fits in so well,” Carroll continued. “He’s really all we’re looking for there at that spot. He’s really good at it. In the supporting role for Russ, they communicate beautifully, they really count on each other for the input and the experiences that they’ve had. Geno is just a consummate guy in that role he’s playing.”
